Imaging

"One picture is worth more than a thousand words"
Almost every dental microscope available on the market can be connected to external devices displaying or archiving images. To do this you need a so-called video track connected to the microscope.
Video track is an optical system that allows the transfer of the image that the microscope operator sees to external devices (such as a monitor, television, computer).
The image can be transmitted "live" (the condition is the use of imaging devices with live view function), or archived on the memory card, or computer disk or more and more popular tablet.
The elements of video track
- Beamsplitter
Located between the head and the binocular of the microscope. Beamsplitter is equipped with a series of lenses and prisms which are responsible for dividing an image that goes simultaneously to the operator's eyes and on the external device.
Depending on the type of beamsplitter there may be connected two or one imaging device.
Beamsplitter is also available in the integrated form with binocular extender, so that the weight of the microscope head is not unnecessarily increased, and thus the head of the microscope is maneuvering easier. - Optical adapter
The adapter allows you to connect the imaging receiver to the beamsplitter. Depending on the imaging receiver (device, camera, etc.) and its fastening, there are different dedicated adapters. Adapters are available for most cameras on the market. - Imaging device
The construction of the video track allows the use of multiple types of receivers. Imaging device may include: a CCD camera, Handycam camcorder or SLR / DSLR camera type.
The recommended solution is to use in the video track the Sony NEX compact camera that provides high quality PHOTO and VIDEO while maintaining a small size and weight of the device itself. With built in function "live view" and the transmission of HDMI digital video, high quality video is also available in real time at an additional monitor.
Video track
The use of video track
- Full patient information
Taking pictures / video of performed procedures, is useful for the presentation of the later treatment plan to the patient or explain its' course. Such documentation allows to explain and illustrate the necessity of often costly procedures. Irreplaceable in situations of conflict, particularly if you need to submit it to insurance companies.
- Help for assistant
The image displayed "live" on the secondary monitor is indispensable aid to assistant (and thus also for the dentist), which can itself take appropriate action quickly which greatly affects the dentist ergonomics.
- Marketing factor
The image which appears on the monitor gives the patient the opportunity to observe the treatment. This is one of the ways to increase the prestige of the office.
- Education
Documentation of cases is useful in educational activities during multimedia presentations, scientific papers, articles. Good quality pictures are particularly relevant in printed publications.

The use of the treatment microscope, in combination with the very well lit field of view allows you to perform operations which, without its’ use would not be possible.
One of the basic tools of the dentist is his sight. Unfortunately, the area of the treatment is very often a few millimeters, and treatment often refers to structures within tenths of a millimeter, thus it becomes impossible to perform precise treatment without the use of a suitable magnification, and strongly, evenly and uniformly illuminated treatment area.
Essential work tool becomes a dental microscope, its’ use in dentistry is becoming wider, and under its control, it is possible to carry out even the most complex procedures, diagnostic and therapeutic processes.
Easiness to distinguish details of the procedure determines the success of clinical trials.
Application of the treatment microscope:
Diagnostics
- finding leaks in existing fillings
- visualization of the initial caries
- noticing lesions in mucous membrane
- finding leaks in prosthetic restorations
- enamel microcracks reveal
Endodontics
High magnification often allow to find the escape of additional channels and their patency,
Which before without magnification were considered obstructed. Thanks to the microscope, possible is:
- finding the root canal orifices
- elaboration of carpal root canals
- elaboration, distinction and give proper shape to the root canals
- filling root canals
- removal of broken canal instruments
- control the purity of the development of root canals
- supply of perforation of the bottom of the chamber and / or the root
Conservative Dentistry
Better visibility facilitates precision during cosmetic work, facilitates basic diagnosis, can determine the severity of the process of carious, increases precision when setting fills in the gingival area.
- fit and sealing molding strips
- micro-elaboration of carious lesions
- execution and filling finish
Prosthetics
The microscope enables a precie preparation of the teeth for planned prosthetic restorations. Often at an early stage of the laboratory works allows the assessment of the structure. It also allows you:
- elaboration of the root for root-crown refill
- the use of minimally invasive techniques and procedures
- micro-preparation of enamel for the veneers
- grinding and finishing of the prosthetic pillars
- check accuracy of prosthetic restorations
- control accuracy of prosthetic restorations embedding and cleaning of cementitious materials excess
- seal control of the made restorations
Surgery
In surgery the work with magnification reduces the extent of the whole procedure, so the healing is much faster which is crucial for the comfort of the treated patient. Microscope allows you to:
- use the microtools and thin surgical sutures which shortens the healing process and the occurrence of postoperative symptoms
- use the atraumatic techniques and procedures
- control and diagnose the tissues involved in the surgery
- control the precision of performed surgery

Confocal setting
- Published on Monday, 07 October 2013 12:13
Confocal setting (called parfocality adjusting) is a disposable setting which allow the user to change magnification during treatment without the need of correcting the focus (image remains sharp at any magnification).
Step 1.
Magnification knob set to the minimum value, and the two dioptre oculars rings on 0
Step 2.
Set the head of the microscope over any flat surface at the focal distance of the lens - "f".
f - distance between the lens and treatment field - info regarding your focal distance is printed on your objective lens.
Step 3.
On a clean white sheet of paper with a sharp pencil, draw a cross in the size of 5cm.
Put the sheet on a flat surface so that the cross was in the centered area, illuminated with light from the microscope head.
Step 4.
Look threw the oculars. If the image is not sharp, set it by adjusting the microscope head up / down. You can use the handle located at the head of the microscope.
Step 5.
Magnification knob set to the maximum value.
Step 6.
Set the focus accurately using a micrometer screw in order to get a clean and clear picture of the cross. If necessary, change the position of the microscope head up/down.
Step 7.
Re-adjust the magnification knob to minimum.
Pay attention not to move the head of the microscope.
Step 8.
Adjust the focus using the diopter rings this time.
To do this:
- turn the rings fully to the right,
- look with the left eye threw the left eyepiece, closing the right eye,
- slowly turn the dioptric ring left on the eyepiece to obtain a sharp image.
Repeat the steps for the right eyepiece (closing the left eye).
Step 9.
Check whether changing the magnification to the next, from the smallest to the largest, the picture is clear and sharp each time.
If not, repeat the above steps ( step 1) to obtain a satisfactory result.
Step 10.
The values obtained this way on the diopters rings should be noted for each individual operator.
Before starting work, always check the dioptre setting.

Focus setting
- Published on Monday, 07 October 2013 12:13
By changing the distance between the lens and the object being viewed , its focus will change as well. This distance depends on the focal length of the lens which is mounted in the microscope.
The most commonly used lens in dentistry is 250mm lens (rarely 200mm or less 300mm).
For 250mm lens the seen picture will be sharp only when the lens of the microscope will be at a distance of 250mm from the treatment area (similarly for the other lenses).
Ways of the focus setting:
- Change the height of the microscopes’ head.
By observing the image through the microscope oculars one should raise or lower the arm until the image becomes sharpest.
- Change the height of the unit with the patient.
By observing the image through the microscope oculars one should raise or lower the unit with the patient until the sharpest image occurs.
- Working with the mirror.
Pulling up or pushing down the mirror form the watching object changes the distance between the lens and the object, and thus the image sharpness.
You should set the height of the head of the microscope, dental unit and operator chair so the body silhouette was fully straight. Just proper selection of these settings enable ergonomic work (see ergonomics).
If you already know how to influence the image sharpness, you can go to other microscope settings: stereoscopic view setting.

Stereoscopic view setting
- Published on Monday, 07 October 2013 10:33
Stereoscopic view setting (called interpupillary distance) is bassicaly fitting the interpupillary distance of the microscope oculars to track your eyes, so that the seen through the glasses image were in one circle.
Step 1
Hold the binocular of the microscope with both hands and with moves like when setting the pair of binoculars, set the binoculars by bringing a situation where the visible image will create one firm circle. In this step, you do not need to focus on getting the perfect image sharpness.
Step 2
If the mounted in your microscope binocular has drawn scale, notice the location of the interpupillary distance. This will later help you to re-set , when the microscope is used by several people.
If the image is seen in one circle you can go down to confocal settings.

Ergonomic work
- Published on Friday, 04 October 2013 13:06
The design of the treatment microscope allows you to set it in the office in an optimal manner with respect to the doctor, the patient and assists.
The most common position of the doctor with the patient during the operation is the place behind the seat headrest, 12 o'clock and it is absolutely connected with the patient lying position.
Correct operation while using a microscope minimizes the strain of systems :nervous, skeletal -muscle and eye. The microscope must be adjusted to the position of the doctor, and not vice versa.
Basic principles of ergonomic work with the microscope:
- Work with the microscope is a sitting type of work.
Take the upright posture. Take advantage of the opportunity to adjust your chair and adjust the treatment unit (see also the section "setting the microscope";
- Adjust the binocular microscope so that your head was not too lovered.
It is good if your microscope is equipped with an inclinable binocular, and ideall if the Binocular Extender will be mounted. This will relieve the neck part of the spine, and thus you will not feel the pain that usually accompanies dentists with their daily work. This will also keep upright body posture, even when the vertical axis of the microscope is directed at an angle relative to the treatment area;
- Hold hands bent in the elbows and slightly pulled out forward.
Ergonomic chair with adjustable armrests eliminates forearm muscle tension, providing a sure point of support for the movements of the wrist.
Microscope location
The location of the microscope relative to the dental unit is of great importance for the preservation of the freedom and convenience to use it. Posted diagram shows the best places usytowania microscope in a dentist's office.
It is recommended that the floor version and ceiling version of the microscope was placed at the site M1 (usually just behind the spittoon). This will ensure maximum maneuverability of the microscope in all directions, and at the same time will not interfere with other devices in the office.
If for some reason the location of the site M1 is not possible, you can put the microscope in a different place in the "Basic zone" defined by light green colour.
Wall version of the microscope is most commonly installed in place of M2.
Location of the microscope in "Second zone" (dark green colour) can occasionally result in less maneuverability of the microscope, depending on the specific arrangement of furniture and equipment in a doctors’ office. It may be necessary to use additional arm extension.
